610x.jpg - A caretaker hand-feeds a orphan elephant in the nursery at the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawala, some 90 kms North-East of Colombo, 08 October 2007. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was started in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife on a twenty five acre coconut property on the Ma Oya river, with three baby elephants found abandoned in the forest, is today the home of nearly 73 elephants of different ages and size. The orphanage was primarily designed to afford care and protection to the many baby elephants found in the jungle without their mothers. In most of these cases the mother had either died or been killed. AFP PHOTO/ Prakash SINGH (Photo credit should read PRAKASH SINGH/AFP/Getty Images)
